Typical job requirements:
· Duties: Automotive mechanics diagnose and repair vehicle issues. They perform routine maintenance,
replace parts, and use diagnostic equipment to identify problems.
· Tools: Wrenches, screwdrivers, OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) scanners, and lifts.
· Knowledge: Automotive systems (engine, transmission, electrical, etc.), diagnostic techniques, and the
ability to use diagnostic software and tools.
Education:
· Education Sources: Vocational schools and community colleges offering automotive technology
programs, as well as training programs through automobile manufacturers and dealers.
· Education Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent; postsecondary vocational education is
preferred.
· Certifications: Certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) is
standard and can be required by employers.
· Cost Range: $36 registration fee + $45 per test (ASE certification); some advanced certifications are
more expensive.
· Time Frame: Certification requires 2 years of work experience, with re-certification every 5 years.
